One
of Thailand's last frontiers for diving and nature
excursions with a cruise of 250 Miles. These islands
belong to the same North-South series of granitic
outcrops of which the Similan and Tachai Islands are
part. During the trip, the liveaboard will visit Similan,
Tachai, Surin Islands and Richelieu Rock (a submerged
rocky reef) where manta rays and whale-sharks are
regularly spotted. Similan Islands offer some of the
best diving in S.E. Asia with blue water, soft and
hard corals, underwater scenery, tropical and pelagic
fish. The spectacular underwater sights at Similan
Islands offer a blend of the Maldives, Seychelles
and Red Sea.
Boon Sung Wreck
Boonsung tin mining wreck, which sank in 1984 under
mysterious circumstances to a depth of 18 metres is
very popular with experienced divers and beginners
alike. Rare inhabitants, such as sea horses, ghost
pipe fish and leopard shark call the Boonsung wreck
their home.
Similan Islands
This group of 9 remote islands located 95
km northwest of Phuket, with more than 20 documented
dive sites, was designated as a national park in 1982.
Diving on the eastern side of the islands can give
you the impression of diving in another part of the
world. Here hard coral gardens gradually slope down
to approximately 30-40 meters where sand takes over
as the water depth increases. Massive schools of colorful
tropical fish are attracted to the nutrient rich water
that swirls around these islands.
Koh Bon
Koh Bon is located about 20 kilometers north of island
#9 of Similan Islands, and features one of the only
vertical walls in Thailand. The dive site is on the
southwestern point and consists of a 33 meter wall
facing the small cove, and a step-down ridge that
carries on to depths of over 45 meters. Leopard sharks
are common on the ridge and on the sandy flats below
the wall. Best place to see Manta Ray, or White Tip
shark.
Koh Tachai
25 kilometers north of Koh Bon, Koh Tachai
has an offshore underwater ridge that runs perpendicular
to the island.Koh Tachai Pinnacle is famous as a place
to see not only the more common species of corals,
fans and tropical fish, but larger animals such as
rays, leopard sharks, and hawks bill turtles.
Surin: Richelieu Rock
.
Richelieu Rock is a small submerged a limestone pinnacle
carpeted with a thick covering pink and purple corals,
about 18 kilometers east of Surin, which only expose
at the lowest of tides. It is rated as one of the
best places in the world for swimming with the whale
shark. Generally, February, March and April are the
best times for a visit. Visibility is normally excellent.
