Mindoro is popularly known as the home of the Mangyan
Tribes and Puerto Galera's superb scuba diving grounds,
as the area was used extensively during the days of
colonial Philippines as anchorage for the Spanish galleons.
As a result, much priceless artifacts have been recovered
by serious divers in the vicinity.
For nearly 50 years Puerto Galera has
attracted scientists studying the Eco-structure of microorganisms,
animals and plants. The diving here is famous for its
diversity and divers return time after time to marvel
at creatures large and small.
There are dives for all levels, from
easy training dives amongst pristine coral to high-voltage
drift dives. Diving is a year-round activity. The 30+
dive sites are all within a 10-15 minute boat ride from
the beach, allow easy and convenient dive planning.
Visibility varies between 40m/130' to 12m/40'. Temperature
is varies between 22C and 30C.
All
the dive sites are replete with huge numbers of splendid
fish (trigger fish, parrot fish, pennant fish, moray
eels, surgeon fish, snappers, groupers, moorish idol,
lizard fish, gobies, bat fish, lion fish, trumpet fish,
puffer fish, file fish, emperors, wrasses, fusiliers
and trevally). Invertebrates from the tiniest transparent
shrimp and neon-coloured nudibranchs to huge basket
sponges adorned with hundreds of multicolored crinoids;
anemones, sea cucumbers, starfish, worms and fire corals
reside with vast numbers of hard and soft corals and
gorgonian sea fans. And on most dives, turtles, octopus,
cuttlefish, eagle rays and sharks will make their guest
appearances ...
